FORmula TRANslation was originally developed by John Backus at IBM in 1950s especially to support numeric and scientific computing. It is one of the oldest programming language that allows easy translation of math formulas into code.

Also, FORTRAN was the first high-level language, using the first compiler ever developed. It improved the speed of writing the programs up to 5 times as compared to other languages of that time.
