What is the Full Form of MPEG ?

MPEG - Moving Picture Experts Group

MPEG is an audio video file format developed by Moving Picture Experts Group formed by International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). The group has released different versions of the file namely MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-3, MPEG-4, MPEG-7, MPEG-21 and so on. MPEG rules cover both: encoding (for storage on disk), and decoding (for digital playback).

MPEG is a set of specification for compressed audio and video file, designed specifically for storing video on Digital Audio Tapes (DAT) and audio files on standard audio Compact Disc (CD). The file extension of MPEG file is ".mpeg". MPEG files previously requires hardware decoders (for storing and playback), which has now been replaced by software-only codecs.

How does MPEG work
The algorithm compresses data to a minimal bit stream that can be easily transmitted and then decompressed. The algorithm stores only the changes from one frame to another, instead of storing the complete frame. It results in reducing the size of overall file. The video information is then encoded using a technique called Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT).
