American National Standards Institute was formed on May 14, 1918 with the primary focus on developing standards for a wide range of technical products. It is the primary industrial standards body in the U.S. that publishes software-related standards in conjunction with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and ASQ (American Society for Quality).

ANSI is a private non-profit organization headquartered in Washington D.C. with its operations office located in New York City. The society does not itself develop any standard, it facilitate this work by recognizing (accrediting) the work with appropriate expertise. ANSI C, a version of C language, American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII) and the Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) are such standards that has been approved by the ANSI committee.
