What is the Full Form of BCG Vaccine ?

BCG - Bacillus Calmette-Guérin

Bacillus Calmette–Guérin, aka Vaccin Bilié de Calmette et Guérin, is a live vaccine that provides immunity or protection against tuberculosis (TB). The vaccine was developed by two French scientists Calmette and Gurin in the 1920s from which the vaccine got its name.

BCG vaccine helps to protect babies and young children against most common forms of TB. It is mostly given to people who are living in the most TB affected parts of the world or having one or more parents born in the TB affected areas.

How should BCG vaccine be used?
Consult your doctor before taking the vaccine. When used to protect against TB, the vaccine is injected directly into the skin. Keep the vaccination area dry for 24 hours after receiving the vaccine. The vaccine is usually given ones, but may be repeated after 2-3 months, if the response is not good.

In best conditions, the BCG vaccine is 80% effective in preventing TB for 15 years, but it may vary according to the geographical conditions of the place.
