The above example demonstrates usage of the <mark> element.

The <mark> element represents a run of text in one document marked or highlighted for reference purposes, due to its relevance in another context. It is similar to using a yellow highlighter pen to mark parts of a text that is to be referred to as part of a discussion in another context.

The <mark> element can also be used to highlight text that is of particular relevance to the user's activity at this point in time. For example, it could be used on a search results page to highlight all occurrences of the user's search phrase. Like this:

<p>Your search for <mark>pukeko</mark> returned 2 results:</p>

<p>I love going for evening walks and seeing the <mark>pukeko</mark>s strolling about. Reminds me of waking up in the morning and watching my resident <mark>pukeko</mark> do the same thing...</p>
