RTI - Right To Information

The "Right To Information" Act mandates timely response to citizen requests for government information. It gives citizens of India a right to request for public information, which is under the control of government officials. It empowers Indian citizen to inspect government works, look into their files and take copies of government documents.

The Act was passed by Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha in 2005 to replace the Freedom of Information Act, 2002. The RTI Act 2005 applies to all the states and Union Territories of India except the state of Jammu and Kashmir, as their is a different Act called Jammu & Kashmir Right to Information Act, 2009 in this state.

The RTI Act promotes transparency and accountability in the working of every public authority and provides an effective framework for retrieval of information. Now even a poor individual can also ask a "WHY" question to the government as he pays sales tax while buying anything.
